CIP Treatment

Treatment generally begins with dietary adjustments (small, frequent meals; soft or liquid diets) and medications to facilitate digestion or treat symptoms. Some individuals require a feeding tube or IV line to meet some or all of their nutritional needs on either a short- or long-term basis; feeding tubes can also be used for drainage to alleviate pressure in the stomach or intestines.

In certain rare cases surgical removal of some portion of the intestine may be needed and in the most severe cases transplant (intestinal or multi-organ) may be considered, most often after the development of complications related to long-term IV nutrition.
