****G-PACT Knowledge Base****
Quote: "GP does not just stand for Gastroparesis. It also
stands for Great People."
G-PACT term of the month: Enteral Nutrition- Enteral nutrition is
nutrition given through a feeding tube which goes directly into the GI
tract. There are four main types of feeding tubes. An NG tube is a tube
which is placed through the nose and into the stomach under flouroscopy
(radiology) and some cases sedation. This tube ends in the stomach and
can be used to suction the stomach or for feedings, although not
commonly used for feedings in patients with GP since the stomach does
not digest food well. An NJ tube is placed the same as an NG tube except
it is advanced further into the GI tract into the intestines. This can
be used for short term feedings in people with Gastroparesis. A G-tube
is a feeding tube which is surgically implanted into the stomach and can
be used for venting stomach contents like the NG tube or for feedings.
More commonly, people with GP are fed through a j-tube which is a
feeding tube surgically implanted directly into the intestine bypassing
the stomach. In a number of instances, a patient will have both a G and
a J-tube. The G-tube is used for venting, and J-tube is used for
feedings in these cases.
****G-PACT Adds Two New Board Members!****
G-PACT recently voted in two new board members who do not hold staff
positions within G-PACT. We received several applications but were
limited to two individuals at this time. We are excited once again about
our continued growth in all areas of G-PACT.
Ed Ahrens has developed an interest in working with G-PACT because his
wife, Kathy, has suffered from gastroparesis for two years. He has a lot
of background in the legal field as an attorney and is now retired from
Florida Power and Light company after having served there for 42 years
in a variety of positions including managing and senior attorney. He is
also a freelance writer and has published two editions of the book
"The Perils of Imprudent Writing" and many other
stories and articles. Ed will be a great addition to our team and I know
we will work well together. I want to formally welcome Ed to our team!
Lisa Boortz has also been selected into the G-PACT Board! Lisa is an
individual with multiple creative talents such as music and art. One of
her biggest hobbies is "Scrapping" aka Scrapbooking. Currently
she is Director of Children's Music at Crossroads Presbyterian Church in
WI. She holds a BA in Music Education and an MA in Music education. She
suffers from a rare condition known as situs inversis which means her
organs are reversed...stomach and spleen on right, liver, heart, and
gall bladder on left. She also has several spleens. Lisa is very driven
with great goals and tremendous enthusiasm about working with G-PACT!
Welcome Lisa to the G-PACT team!
