Nissen Fundoplication

The nissen fundoplication is performed for people with severe GERD (Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease) through either laparoscopic surgery or an open procedure. GERD is common in people dealing with gastroparesis. This surgery prevents acid from backing up into the esophagus and damaging the lining.

The surgeon wraps the upper portion of the stomach around the esophagus.  If the stomach is wrapped completely around the esophagus, it is considered a total wrap. Sometimes doctors will do only a partial wrap. Usually a person cannot burp, vomit, or pass gas after this procedure. This is a lifelong effect. However, if successful it can be a cure for GERD.

The nissen fundoplication sometimes helps the gastroparesis, but it is not usually recommended for people with GP unless absolutely necessary because it can worsen the GP. In some cases a person develops GP as a result of the Nissen. As with all treatments, the positive and negatives must be evaluated.
